ADVICE

1 : Do not ignore Flood Warning Notices
2 : Carry a camera at all times
3 : Carry a real camera, not a mobile phone

Well, I did the best I could and my car was not affected . . Camera : Sony 700i camera-phone.

AFTERTHOUGHTS

My car was parked far enough away to remain safe – although I’d often parked right where the flood struck. The amazing thing about this event was the speed with which it happened. Once the river had broken the banks, the water flowed quickly across roads and into gardens with amazing pace. It was also silent . . very silent. Until the car alarms started, that is !

The waters went as quickly as they came and it was only cars that got damaged. Those “lucky” enough to live by the riverside learned long ago not to put anything where the river can reach but many commuters park their cars here for the station and did not return until much later.

Mechanically, the majority of cars seemed fine although upholstery and belongings were ruined by as much as two feet of water. There is, also, a knack in driving away through floods : do not do so gently, keep the revs up or you are in big and expensive trouble !

All an experience but the lesson I learned was to always carry a camera . . the camera-phone did well but I think of the shots I could have got . .
