So here is what I would love. If you put together a PDF about your portrait process. You could show the original digital negative, some choices you consider in raw conversion, and then take us into Photoshop and show us your work flow. I know that each picture is unique, and that you would approach each a little differently, but you are doing something really great to your portraits, and each of them fall into a particular kind of style. It would be awesome to see the kinds of layers and things you are working with.
Anyway - as usual Miles, this is great work. Tell me you are making a living off your camera!?
Cheers

Awesome - classic portrait - razor sharp, interesting expression, shallow DOF. Great!!

An awesome portrait filled with so much persona. The focal point exactly where it should be for a full frontal face portrait brings to the attention the wonderful longevity of the mans skin texture and tone and the blemishes that life has marked him with.
A wonderful warmth behind those old eyes.

I've added my thoughts to flickr, but this is worth a second comment! So, nice work! I'm really loving this shot, and would second the vote for some behind the scenes details.

I must say this is a fantastic portrait of this man. The composition is good, as others have said the focal point is perfect, and the focus is just as good as it should be. Is it taken with Canons 85mm f/1.2?
2008-03-18 Miles
Thanks everyone, this is one of my favourite portraits.
There's not a lot I can say about the process, it starts with b&w conversion using channel mixer adjustment layers then I use dodging and burning techniques to bring out detail, contrast. The process always varies, I agree that a look at each stage of the it might be illuminating, I'll consider it.
Kjetil, I wish I had an 85mm f/1.2! This is taken with the 85mm f/1.8 on a 40d. From what I've heard the f/1.8 is actually a better street lens, the f/1.2 being more at home in a studio. The only L prime I really lust after right now is the 35mm f/1.4.

I agree with Joshua... your portraits are fantastic and I'd love to learn more about your workflow, etc. Also, what did you do for sharpening?
2008-03-18 Miles
Ian, I use the 'smart sharpen' filter in photoshop, though I only apply sharpening on the image when it's sized for export. Sharpening should always be the last thing you do.

great portrait !!
2008-03-19 Andriy
That's a wonderful portrait. There is bunch of these guys around in downtown Toronto, do you give them a quarter or something in exchange for the pic?
2008-03-19 Miles
Andriy,
I've known most of the people I take portraits of for a while, some, like Dan in the previous portrait, I've known for years. Occasionally I'll meet someone I don't know but I try to spend a bit of time with them, just to get to know them and establish a rapport which is what, I think, makes the portrait that much better. A couple of times I've met people, taken the portrait and moved on, it really depends on character. Regardless I never give people money for the shot, they're certainly not all homeless and those that are I help out once in a while anyway.

Very characteristic portrait. Great tone range.

Beautiful portrait. So much character. The beard, obviously, is amazing, but more than that, the eyes convey so much. Around that wrinkled face, the eyes are clear and intense. Really compelling work. Bravo

Great portrait. I've switched back to B&W for a lot of my shots lately. Your picture proves that it is often powerful.
