These are stairs made of curly maple. I captured them inside one of the homes I shot for magazine/internet use. This shot posed a couple of tricky problems. For one, the section I shot was at the top of the stairs. It had to be captured from about 15 feet (4 meters I think) in the air. I did this by securing my tripod to an extra large folding ladder. The second problem was capturing the pearly-creamy quality of the wood. The stairwell was naturally lit so it took a combination of photo lights and patience waiting for the natural light to get it just right. Too much ambient light and it was all glare, too little and you couldn't see the curly quality. I'm not sure how it will look under Aminus3's image compression, but I'll roll the dice.

Thanks for explaining how you took the shot. Nice composition. I love curly maple -- I think the grain comes across clearly here, but somehow looks a bit unreal/inorganic, maybe that is because of the image compression you mention? Like there is a tiny element of texture missing.
