I've never had enough confidence to put myself in situations that call for people photography, but when they're thrust at me almost forcefully I'm happy to oblige.
The situation that provided this result (among others) was a request from local band Three for an informal shoot on location somewhere like Severalls, Colchester. I explained my lack of experience in the area and amusingly short equipment list, agreed to do the whole thing for free—photos in exchange for experience—and next morning we met in old Harwich; a place photographically unappealing to those who've spent more than an hour or two there. I appreciated the challenge I faced.
The light was less than ideal; direct sunlight from above cast harsh shadows on every uneven surface, but since my window of opportunity was prearranged and I still lacked diffusers and reflectors I had to make the best of it. As this shot might suggest it was fun and rewarding nonetheless. After a few hours in Lightroom I had managed to group together 114 ready for submission. Many of them were subject to Lightroom Develop Presets but as I learn advanced processing and manipulation techniques my dependence on these is sure to decrease. This particular one has seen no more digital butchery than a minor crop. No preset-enhanced photography finds its way this far, you might like to hear.
