Blackberry bramble

Latin name Rubus fruticosus.

It's fascinating how the new leaves are tinged with deep red, which disappears as the leaves mature. There are some references to this plant having been called the "Holy Thorn", perhaps because the base of each thorn is blood red.

This is another of those pictures that seems to change character depending on the background. Which do you prefer?
