I am about to head out for NYC........ I had a rapid look at recent images processed and ready to be posted........ but the cupboard was bare.......... except in there I found a set of scans......... not exactly recent........scans of out of control black and white prints that were made from photographs I shot way back in the mists of time....... Matt sent these scans to me the other day, I posted one already....... these images date from the days of 'Thatchers Britain ' . This one is made in the poor East London district on the very edge of the wealthy city financial district....... at bricklane market ........ it was a little grim down there....... some very sad scenes of poverty and always the vague threat of violence at night .... but ...... it was a great place for a curry....... we used to sometimes roll down there after the Insight office would close in the evening sometimes bringing along other photojournalists from photo agencies that existed close-by to us......... like Impact and Reflex and more rarely Katz and Network ........ then we would all argue like mad about the relative merits of the master pieces of photographers not present.............. while consuming Tiger beer and chicken korma in slightly unwise quantities.
This like pretty well all my black and white from back in the day....... was shot on 35mm Kodak Tri-X using the mighty Nikon F4.
I love this image... although, when I look at it I always find myself mumbling in the style of Newman and Baddiel "that's your mum that is".

Wow, fantastic, reminds me of lower east side photos from around the same time probably. right before i went digital in college i was using the tri-x until i found out about fuji acros. but all was different back then. I heard that the density of tri-x film has been getting thinner every few years. hey i love the new layout with the easy access to the archives on your blog / site here. Thanks Lucky...... Tri-X it was my first love...... I worked for an agency that gave me free HP5 but it was'nt the same as soon as I left there I went straight back to Tri-X.......... thanks for your kind remarks about the layout and archive...... its all down to Amin......http://amintorres.com/blog/ who very generously helped me.......er..... I mean.......more than helped...... I mean did it for me!!

cool, no worries about that tag list thing, when I got mentioned, I must've procrastinated writing my post for a month or more. Yeah I suppose my entry went pretty far off in strange tangents[reply]lucky @ May 28, 2008, 8:06 pm
Tis amazing how the use of film stock of one kind or another seems to define an epoch..the first and second world wars..definitely gritty black and white..the fities in the UK likewise, although the US in the 50's seems more Kodachrome (could this be to do with post war economic boom and optimism) as does the Vietnam war..then films got better and then dig came along, and got very good..maybe we now will witness a visual sort of "end of history"...until the time we are all shooting high definition virtual reality clips..now that will be odd. Thatchers Britain was definitely the high water mark of TriX grimness though.. although I still can't see anything at all as I am completely encased in a hot sweaty latex gimp suit![reply]The Rubber Photo Gimp @ May 29, 2008, 11:28 am
DR how amazing that you can type while wearing that stuff....... I would have thought the high water mark for Tri-X is probably on your forhead right? As its the only bit showing.....[reply]Britney Houston @ May 29, 2008, 7:15 pm

Old memories of the `Old` market in the Bull Ring come flooding back, there we are in our school uniforms......ha, ha[reply]Paul Sykes @ June 4, 2008, 4:16 pm
yeah Paul this has the vibe of the old Brum ... weirdly I once worked on a sweet stall on West Brom market... Now that was a place of extreme charm a bit like Brick Lane and the old Bull Ring...when I was in the 6th form...used the money to buy camera gear... a card board box ? You were lucky!..... The old Birmingham was pretty grim but we loved it..... Hehehe..... Cheers Jez XX[reply]jezblog on iphone @ June 4, 2008, 8:11 pm
