Rabat is the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. The tower only reached 44m, about half of its intended 86m height. The rest of the mosque was also left incomplete, with only the beginnings of several walls and 200 columns being constructed. The tower, made of red sandstone, along with the remains of the mosque and the modern Mausoleum of Mohammed V, forms an important historical and tourist complex in Rabat.

nice shot

@danthro: The tour guide said that the earthquake of Lisbon destroyed half of the tower in 1755. Thanks for your visit, danthro!
Makes you wonder what might have been ...
Cool shot.

Very interesting place indeed. Any idea why they didn't complete it?

@Nicholas: The tour guide said that the earthquake of Lisbon destroyed half of the tower in 1755. Thanks Nicholas.

@Lorraine: I'm glad you like them Lorraine! :)
I'm coming to this backwards in time. It makes an excellent reference picture for the following day's take on this same tower.
