Ryan and I started stage three on a bus with roughly 15 other “spectators.” Now, see when most people watch a Rally event…they bring along a million collapsible chairs and no less than two ice chests worth of their favorite alcoholic beverage. Lets just say, that particular bus trip was not the best way to start stage three.

After finding our way off the bus, we made our way roughly a quarter mile down the road to a tight right hand turn. The turn, where my previous shot was captured, was a tricky one. Starting off gradual and tightening toward the end, many drivers came in a bit to fast and were on the brakes pretty hard coming out.

We had watched a few cars round the bend and I had caught a few good images, when what do you know, it starts to rain. Hoping to keep my new gear from getting waterlogged, Ryan and I began to make our way under a canopy of nearby trees.

Almost as soon as we turned our back we heard an engine roar followed by the sound of crunching metal. The first image is what we saw when we turned our heads. Car number 35 had misjudged the corner, taken it to fast and caught their front tire on the outer lip. The car came to rest on its side roughly 20 feet down the road.

Being the diligent photographer, I rushed onto the road and started snapping. While clicking away like made, I happened to notice a fire had broken out in the engine compartment. Unable to get out of the car at the moment, the driver handed out the fire extinguisher to a spectator. The second shot shows our helpful spectator dousing the fire and sending a real dramatic plume of smoke into the air.

Within a few minutes, the crowd had the car back on four tires. Surprisingly enough, they were able to fire it back up and get it safely off the road. Where I snapped the last photo, showing their badly smashed back window.

Keep in mind. At no point during this whole incident did cars stop running. Having another rally car rip around the corner at roughly 2-minute intervals just brings a whole other level of excitement to a crash.
