Am I a beginner? I'm not sure really - I started taking photos seriously in Easter 2007 when I bought a Fuji F31 digital compact camera. Although I've owned film cameras in the past, I only ever used them for simple snapshots.

Its the instant feedback that we get from a digital camera that fascinates me as it gives so much opportunity for learning about what does and doesn't work without having to wait for film to be developed. Whatever progress I've made photographically over the last few months is due mainly to being able to experiment freely and review results instantly on the camera's LCD.

I've also had a huge amount of help from other contributors to DPReview's Fujitalk and Nikon D40-80 forums.

I started working as an Architect exactly 20 years ago now but the training took me 8 long years before that. One of the main things that this long educational process does for architectural students is to teach them to use their eyes and to properly look at their environment and surroundings - I always think that I entered college with my vision turned downwards to the pavement but left with my eyes invariably turned upward to the rooftops. (Stepping in stuff is a hazard of the profession:-)

I guess that the reason this digital camera has had such a big impact on me is that it has re-awakened that youthful curiosity of vision that filled me with joy all those years ago but which I had partly forgotten or mislaid.

Taking good photos of the things that I find beautiful, strange or funny is of course a completely different matter from just seeing them. Amongst all the moments of frustration at my lack of photographic ability there have been moments of elation at being able to capture an image in the way that I wanted.

Hopefully I'll be able to continue to progress in ability - in the meantime I hope you see something in these photos that you like and if you can take time to give honest constructive criticism it would be greatly appreciated.

November 2007.....

Update December 2007 - I've now bought a Nikon D40 DSLR which has made a huge difference to my ability to capture scenes in a way that does them justice. I hope you can see the improvement in my photos!
