Catherine Buca, a 29-year-old photographer from the West Midlands area of the UK, perfects shadows, fading, and blurring. Each of these (or all of them in some cases), give her photographs a unique, intimate style. There are often times when it is the shadow or the blurred area that seem more of a focus than the subject. This style creates an air of secrecy, of a shared mystery that we are privy to and yet are not. We question what is beyond, within, or around those shadows and blurred areas. The squared format is enticing and seductive -- creating a space where what is beyond the scope of the lens is nearly as important as what is seen because of the enigmatic scene that is created.
Catherine admits to being somewhat pretentious about her photography once-upon-a-time but now defines her style as self-satisfying. She photographs because it pleases her. Isn't that, afterall, the best reason to do it?
