Every night, at least here in the U.S., the news brings us images of war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan. Heartbreaking images that show us how cruel war can be. How refreshing it is, then, to view Natalia's photography of an Afghanistan that is brimming with life. Natalia, who is from the U.S., but is working in Afghanistan, documents the trials and tribulations of life in a difficult environment. She also shows the triumphs of human spirit in the smile of a child, the competitions of men, and the uniting of people for a common good.
Here, water is scarce, but help doesn't seem to be. Not only do we witness boys hauling water, but we see villagers working together to provide a resource so many of us take for granted. Natalia's images are the other side of war. They are the images of our fellow mankind succeeding during a difficult time, and doing so with admirable tenacity.
