There are photographs that make us squirm, not because of the content matter, but because there is something about them that is a bit unsettling and prickle the back of our subconscious. We can't quite put a finger on it, but it is there, begging to be itched. Marcelo Aurelio is a master at producing those types of photographs. Even while photographing in color, there is a darkness underlying the subjects, a je ne sais quoi, that certain something that can't quite be identified.
Even in the most innocuous shots, I now find myself looking for that darker edge. What is Marcelo saying with this photograph? Or this one? He makes me think while I'm taking in the perfection of the composition and processing. That, in and of itself, is not such a bad thing.
